ROAD TRAVEL GUIDES

At ROAD, before getting involved in travel guides, we had to be clear on certain things. First of all, we determined who we would like to reach through our publications: our reading audience consists of travellers. If this seems to be an obvious and self-evident audience for a travel guide, you are mistaken! In fact, ROAD may be the only Greek publishing company to target travellers, in the sense that its publications are purchased and used by travellers, they are designed and written with traveller requirements in mind, and the only income from these publications comes from their bookstore sales. Their creation is financed exclusively by ROAD and thus they are devoid of third party "influences". The ROAD travel guides promote what is worthwhile and presence in the guides does not depend on advertisement fees paid.

The authors of the ROAD travel guides spend months on end in the regions they write about and check everything out very carefully without ever disclosing their identity. Thus, the food we are served, the rooms we stay in and the service we receive are no different from what would be offered to any other traveller and this is how we present it. If a landscape is beautiful, a beach clean, a village tidy, a hotel good, a tavern special, this is exactly how we present and of course recommend it. If the landscape is downgraded, the beach unclean, the village dismal, the hotel inadequate, the tavern a rip off, we do not hesitate to write as much so that the travel guide user can avoid mishaps.

The authors of the ROAD travel guides, Stefanos Psimmenos and Antonios Iordanoglou start out by researching all available bibliography on the region they plan to write about. Then they pack their bags with film and cameras, take their handheld recorders, load their motorcycles and start out on an exploration of the place they are describing - a trip that lasts for months and sometimes even years! When they return, their laptop is a goldmine of "first hand" information, a treasure - the greatest part of which is recorded in travel bibliography for the first time. This material (or a strict selection to be exact, since the volume of the material is gigantic!), together with the detailed maps especially designed for each publication and the best photographs, are handed over to the ROAD graphic artists who transform it into the pages of a book.

The ROAD travel guides have certain rare qualities that make them unique. To begin with, they involve a great deal of investigation, many kilometres of field research, much reading and a lot of effort. Their pages are full of information presented for the first time, heretofore unknown routes, archaeological sites and monuments of our cultural heritage that have just been brought to light, and landscapes of stunning beauty that even the locals were unaware of!

In addition, they have a unique style. They are written candidly, in a casual and direct manner, and humorously and, therefore, dispose of all the characteristics of communication among friends. Travelling with a ROAD travel guide, you will feel you are in the company of a friend that knows the place well. Not with a local that feels everything is wonderful or a history professor whose only interest lies in the cultural realm, nor of course with the local restaurateur or hotel owner who will inevitably tell you that their restaurant or hotel is the best in the region. You are travelling with a friend who knows the place well and shows you its best parts, as it is you he wishes to please. This is because you, the users of ROAD maps and travel guides, constitute our exclusive source of income.

We, the ROAD travel authors, have selected the motorcycle as our vehicle of choice, as it allows us to travel easily and everywhere, does not isolate us from the environment, is easy to maintain and use and, furthermore, adds gusto to our exhaustingly tiring work. However, ROAD travel guides are targeted to everyone, not only motorcycle travellers but also those who prefer to travel by jeep or by normal car, whether young or older. They are geared to amateurs as well as people with special interests such as archaeology and history, lone travellers and families alike. The ROAD travel guides are complete publications that add a new dimension to your travels.
